Markel, a prominent US-based specialty insurer, has announced the launch of professional indemnity (PI) insurance products specifically designed for the Australian market.
This strategic move comes in response to a notable reduction in PI insurance capacity over recent years, leaving many professionals seeking reliable coverage options.

Following the establishment of offices in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane in September 2023, Markel has introduced its first locally worded PI products. These offerings cater to a broad spectrum of professions, including accounting, construction, design and construct, insurance, media, and miscellaneous sectors.

Kym Beazleigh, Head of Professional and Financial Risks Australia at Markel, highlighted the company's commitment to supporting complex and evolving sectors. He noted that the Australian PI market has experienced significant pricing and coverage remediation over the past five years, particularly affecting industries such as construction, engineering, energy, and professional services.

Markel's new PI solutions aim to provide sustainable and diversified coverage, addressing the specific needs of Australian-domiciled businesses. The insurer's global expertise, particularly in renewable energy, positions it to support sectors that have historically been underserved in the Australian market.

For Australian professionals and businesses, Markel's entry offers an alternative source of PI coverage, potentially alleviating some of the capacity constraints that have characterized the market in recent years. Engaging with experienced insurance brokers to explore these new offerings can help businesses secure coverage that aligns with their specific risk profiles and operational needs.

As the PI insurance landscape continues to evolve, staying informed about new market entrants and product offerings is essential for professionals seeking to protect themselves against potential liabilities.
